This laid-back 'American bar' is about as American as a plate of escargots, but whilst the atmosphere remains entirely French, despite the exposed brickwork and wide shelves of gleaming spirits behind the bar, that’s no bad thing. Warm, tobacco tones give an evening here a pleasing sense of being cocooned from the world, surrounded by efficient, bow-tied bar staff who know how to set light to orange peel, or drip exactly the right amount of bitters onto a sugar cube.
The cocktail menu is impressive and extensive, with 30 different drinks requiring glamorous, speakeasy-style additions such as green chartreuse or foaming egg white, and all cocktails are immaculately and freshly made, alcoholic or otherwise. Time goes by in the swizzle of a stick here, lost in conversation to an old jazz sountrack, watching bartenders craft drinks like artists dabbing paint on canvas- so perhaps it’s just as well that at weekends, it’s open till 4am.
