Near the Rue Merciere, close to the banks of the Saone, this lovely Rococo style café is like a miniature 19th century theatre, with gilt mirrors, velvet drapes, murals and chandeliers, almost exactly as it was when it opened back in 1864. The concessions to modernity are the bright pink and lime green planters which line the wide outside terrace, and, less delightfully, a large TV in the bar area. But sitting by the window, all that customers need see is carved wood, marble tables and waiters balancing trays of chilled white wine and tiny coffees. In warm weather, the outdoor tables are an elegant spot to watch the world go by. Before noon, prices are lower, and excellent food is served all day.
